Seirei Christopher University Email Newsletter No.1 (August 2020)
Due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19, we are facing a challenging time carrying out face-to-face international exchange activities as we used to. Therefore, the International Education and Scholar Services (IESS) office at SCU has decided to send you an email newsletter once every two months to share what is happening at our university. We hope you enjoy it!
1. Opening of Seirei Christopher Elementary School in April 2020
2020年4月聖隷クリストファー小学校の開講
Seirei Christopher Elementary School aims to develop individuals who will play an active role in the international community with the spirit of “Love Thy Neighbor” by practicing inquiry-based learning in an English immersion program while understanding Japanese culture and traditions. The students study English while valuing the Japanese language to acquire both Japanese and English skills. This means that the students learn IN English at the same time they learn English.
Seirei Gakuen is preparing for a “Global School” concept that will lead to a middle school and a high school which will also be based on English immersion education and inquiry-based learning. Also, we are considering introducing an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. (Excerpt from Seirei Gakuen Ho (Letter) No.44 issued in July 2020)

2a. Regular face-to-face lectures resumed 対面授業がスタート。
SCU postponed the start of the new school year to Monday, April 20 and began online lectures using Zoom Meetings. Students gradually came back to the campus for face-to-face lectures in mid-May, and almost every course resumed as regular face-to-face lectures in mid-June.
The Department of Child Education and Social Work in the School of Social Work held a lecture on “Children and Physical Education” in the university’s gym, where some students attended online. They made sure to prevent infection by keeping a distance while walking and doing activities using mats to avoid crowding. Both students attending in the gym and online exchanged their opinions on Zoom.

【看護学部】学生が夏の人間ドックの食事メニュー「夏味(なつみ)」を考案。
Since 2019, SCU and the Seirei Preventive Medical Examination Center of the Seirei Social Welfare Community (located next to Seirei Mikatahara General Hospital) has been carrying out various activities for the purpose of conducting educational and public awareness activities related to health, such as improving the cancer screening rate for younger generations.
This time, nursing students collaborated with nutritionists and created a meal menu plan called “Natsumi”, which means a “Taste of Summer” in Japanese, for meals provided from June to August. What is impressive about the meals is their gentle flavor and nutrition balance. One of the students who participated in this project said, “I am currently studying dietary restrictions for people with diabetes and kidney disease, and I would like to utilize this experience to think about diet.” (Excerpt from Chunichi Shinbun Newspaper)
